Rangers to Sign Infielder Trevor Plouffe

The Rangers have reportedly agreed to a minor-league deal with third baseman Trevor Plouffe, according to MLB.com.

The 31-year old Plouffe is coming off a disappointing year after signing with the Oakland A’s. He only played in 58 games and before moving on to the Tampa Bay Rays during the middle of the season. Plouffe ended the 2017 campaign with a .198 batting average with nine home runs and 19 RBI. Prior to that, he spent six seasons with the Minnesota Twins.

The veteran will likely do battle for a roster spot in a reserve role, having also seen time at shortstop and third base during his career. However, the Rangers are set with Adrian Beltre at third base and Joey Gallo getting a bulk of the playing time at first base. Plouffe will also face heavy competition for a utility role on the team during spring training with Jurickson Profar and Ryan Rua in the mix.

Pitchers and catchers report to Surprise, Arizona on Wednesday. The first full squad workout will be next Tuesday.
