Profar Likely to Start 2015 in Minors

The Texas Rangers most likely realize now that they made a mistake in 2013 by putting Jurickson Profar on the big-league roster as a utility man who got a couple of starts a week only to see his development delayed.

It backfired in a big way in 2014 when he missed the entire season with a shoulder injury, and suddenly the top prospect in all of baseball has turned into a guy with no trade value after he was deemed untouchable just a couple of years ago.

Speaking to reporters at the MLB Winter Meetings on Thursday, Rangers general manager Jon Daniels let it be known that it is highly unlikely Profar will begin the 2015 season on the Rangers' big-league roster, even if he is 100 percent healthy and ready to roll, which he's expected to be.

“Probably not,” Daniels told reporters of Profar’s chances to open the season in the majors. “He needs to play. We’re not going to keep him as our utility guy.”

Ain't that the truth.

Profar's development was delayed in 2013 when he hit .234 with a .308 on-base percentage, 11 doubles, six homers and drove in 26 runs in 85 games as a super-utility player spelling guys at second base, shortstop and third base, and even a game in the outfield that went miserably.

It was a huge mistake the Rangers made when he could've been playing every day in Frisco or Round Rock, where he will likely start the 2015 season with Rougned Odor's emergence last season as a big-league second baseman.

If Profar performs well in the minors, it could help rebuild his trade value and could net the Rangers a valuable piece at the July trade deadline if they're in a postseason race.
