The press release from the Frisco Convention and Visitors Bureau and the Women’s Professional Billiards Association states, “64 fun loving, well dressed, attractive, vivacious women from around the world will compete with 128 men” in the Ultimate 10 Ball Championships this weekend.

The tournament continues throughout the weekend, after yesterday’s check-in and practice rounds, at the Embassy Suites Dallas/Frisco, near Stonebriar Centre. Matches start at 8 a.m., 10 a.m., Sunday — which is way too early to play pool — with the last games racked up at 10 p.m.

They’re playing for a total of $100,000 in prize money, so the tension should be pretty high. Judging by some of the player photos, some tactics might be kind of low, as in cut, and, speaking from experience, that’s just distracting because, according to the Men's Handbook, a guy is required, by law, to look.

The public relations pitch letter pointed to a few interesting storylines: “local players [who] just earned their pro tour card this year (are they ditching their jobs and playing billiards/pool for a living?), husbands and wives [who] both play on the pro tour (couples that play together and work together), a deaf player who is an international champion, junior champions breaking onto the pro scene this year, players [who] were in Philippines during the tsunami or in Japan during the earthquake,” so there’s your drama beyond the eight-ball dangling on the lip of the pocket.

I’m betting on the women.
