Potential Target: Ian Kennedy

In an ongoing series, we'll take a look at possible free-agent and trade targets for the Texas Rangers this winter.

Target: Ian Kennedy, RHP

2014 stats: 13-13, 3.63 ERA, 207 strikeouts, 70 walks, 201 innings pitched

The rumor mill continues to grow between the Rangers, San Diego Padres and trade talks, and with some good reason considering former Rangers assistant GM A.J. Preller is now the GM at San Diego. With that said, Preller and his right-hand man Don Welke, who went with him from Texas, are very familiar with the Rangers' system (obviously) and know who they want.

Kennedy is a good target for the Rangers, who are seeking to trade for someone they view as a No. 3 starter to slide in behind Yu Darvish and Derek Holland. He's had some big seasons in the past but has also struggled. With that said, Kennedy had one of his better seasons in 2014 as he struck out more batters than innings he pitched, which is pretty remarkable considering his history that includes a Cy Young-caliber season in 2011 when he led the NL in wins.
