The Texas Rangers are heavily rumored, and even moreso today, to be in on Atlanta Braves slugger Justin Upton, who they tried to get via free agency before the 2013 season before ultimately losing out to the Braves.
It seems pretty much everyone is on the table with the exception of Joey Gallo and Jorge Alfaro, the Rangers' top two prospects. It'd be great to get Upton's bat, along with the 30 homers and 100 RBIs that come with it, to plug into the vacant left field hole in their 2015 outfield, but it still seems like a better idea that the Rangers try to get another pitcher.
Even if the Rangers go on and land Hyeon-jong Yang, the Korean star they have reportedly won the bidding on, he's not going to be enough to satisfy their need for starting pitching. Right now, the Rangers' rotation goes like this: Yu Darvish, Derek Holland, TBD, Colby Lewis, Nick Tepesch/Nick Martinez.
What if it looked more like this? Yu Darvish, Derek Holland, TBD, Hyeon-jong Yang, Colby Lewis?
Getting Yang gives the Rangers a chance to have expendable big-league ready, young, controllable arms in Tepesch and Martinez to make available via trade, not only for a guy like Upton but more importantly a guy like Tyson Ross or Andrew Cashner to throw into that No. 3 rotation spot.
