Ohio State Lands 2-Time Nat'l Champion Coach Urban Meyer

High-profile coach aims to turn around storied program

Urban Meyer, who won two national championships at Florida, has accepted the head coaching job at Ohio State.

The 46-year-old Ohio-born coach has long been rumored for the job, and the Washington Post confirmed that he accepted the job two days after the team lost to arch-rival Michigan for the first time in eight years. Meyer succeeds Luke Fickell, who coached the team on an interim basis after Jim Tressel resigned amid a tattoos-for-memorabilia scandal.

Sources told WKMG-TV in Orlando last week that Meyer would be introduced in coming days after agreeing to a seven-year, $40 million deal. The Post did not confirm those terms.

Meyer had most recently worked as a game analyst for ESPN. Prior to that, he led the Florida Gators to two national championships, both with Heisman Trophy winning quarterback Tim Tebow at the helm.

Ohio State, one of college football's most storied programs, capped its season Saturday with a 40-34 defeat that left them at 6-6 overall and 3-5 in the Big Ten.
