A lawyer for Dirk Nowitzki says he doubts a woman's claim that she is pregnant with the Dallas Mavericks star's baby.

In an interview from jail this week, Christa Ann Taylor, 37, told The Dallas Morning News that Nowitzki was her fiancé and that she learned of her pregnancy after being arrested at his house.

Taylor was arrested on violating probation and theft of services warrants.

"If in the remote instance there is any validity to this woman's claim of pregnancy, Dirk will do whatever can be done to ensure the well being of the child," Nowitzki's lawyer, Robert Hart, said.

His statement was released to ESPN.com on Thursday.

Privacy laws prevent officials from releasing medical records.

Hart said "we have been told" that she hadn't received a pregnancy test.

Taylor's court-appointed lawyer, Don Duesler, declined to comment on the pregnancy issue. Taylor remains in jail in Beaumont. Authorities said she has at least eight aliases.

Sources have told media outlets that Nowitzki reportedly bought Taylor a $250,000 engagement ring.

People close to Nowitzki said his inner circle of teammates and longtime counselors advised him to hire a private investigator to do a background check on Taylor in preparation for a prenuptial agreement.  The investigator then learned about Taylor's checkered past and police were notified.
