Nowitzki Climbs Another Milestone While Mavs' Offense Falters

Good news: Dirk Nowitzki hit a trademark Flamingo Fadeaway for his 10,000th NBA basket last night in Sacramento.

Bad news: For his Mavs to beat the Kings he needed to hit eight more of them.

The Mavs took a nine-point lead after the first quarter but totally ground to a half offensively in the second half of a 112-98 loss to the Kings on Monday. Dallas scored a whopping 40 points in the second half against one of the NBA’s most lenient defenses. The Mavs were done in a by an anemic 13-point third quarter and a gaudy 28 3-point misses (9 of 37).

The highlight of the night was Dirk’s second-quarter hoop that allowed him to join an elite group of only 12 other players to make 10,000 field goals. Last week he became the 17th player to make 1,600 3-pointers and will soon (204 more points) surpass Shaquille O’Neal for 6th place on the NBA’s all–time scoring list.

But if the Mavs aren’t better offensively, Dirk’s milestones will be their only highlights of the season.
