North Texas' Katie Meili Wins Bronze in Women's 100-Meter Breaststroke

North Texas swimmer Katie Meili won a bronze medal in Monday night's final in the women's 100-meter breaststroke at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio.

Meili, 25, swam a time of 1:05.69 to capture the bronze. American swimmer Lilly King set an Olympic record in winning the gold medal, with a time of 1:04.93.

"I am so happy and so thrilled, and, I mean a bronze medal – there's so many people that that medal goes to, not just me. There's just so many people who helped me get here, and they deserve it," Meili said.

The silver medal went to Russian swimmer Yulia Efimova, who has been embroiled in a doping controversy.

Asked if she thought the win made a statement to Efimova, King said, "I hope I did, that we can still compete clean, and do well at the Olympic Games, and that's how it should be."
