Dirk Nowitzki will not be attending the 2012 Olympics in London.

The German national team lost to Lithuania at the European Basketball Championships Sunday and failed to earn a berth to the 2012 Summer Olympics.

It was a hero's welcome for NBA Finals MVP Dirk Nowitzki in his hometown of Wuerzburg, Germany.

London would have been Nowitzki's second trip to the Olympics. He played for Germany in the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing and even carried the German flag in the Opening Ceremony.

Nowitzki has said the 2008 Olympic experience is among the highlights of his career.

The Dallas Mavericks forward really hasn't taken a break after winning the NBA Finals and being named the series MVP, though that may change if the NBA lockout continues and the league doesn't get a new collective bargaining agreement in place before the 2011-12 season begins.

The team announced it's 2011-12 preseason schedule last month -- which starts with an exhibition season game in Indiana on Oct. 1, just over four weeks away.
