New Film Chronicles Infamous North Texas High School Football Team

The film "Carter High" aims to share the story of the 1988 Dallas Carter High School Cowboys, the team that saw their state championship title taken away.

Former Carter High School head coach Freddie James has the hardware to prove his success as the leader of the Cowboys for 14 seasons. But the one big ring and trophy he can't display at his Dallas home is the 1988 State Championship.

"It hurt not only me but it hurt the community and the neighborhood, and probably everybody in Dallas," James said.

The Cowboys won the game at Texas Stadium against a team from San Antonio. What James didn't know at the time was that one of his star players was academically ineligible to take the field.

As a result, the team's title was taken away.

"Sprague Stadium is where the Carter Cowboys won many of their games in the 80's, but the '88 team stood out," James said. "They went 14 and zero that season and some high school football fans still call them the most talented team in Texas' history."

The movie, "Carter High" chronicles that storied season, and the off field behavior that led to prison sentences for some of the players.

"When they got out of the troubles they were in, they went on and still held their head up high," said James.

The movie was directed by a former Carter player, and the cast includes Vivica A. Fox. The title track is by Dallas artist Dorrough.

"I can relate to the players sometimes, the hardships sometimes; you step out of your category of being a football player and do some things that aren't the best and smartest decisions," said Dorrough.

Actor Charles Dutton will take the roll as James. The pair spent hours together before filming began.

"It's going to be a good movie. I just hope everybody comes and sees it," said James.

"Carter High" opens in theaters on Friday, Oct. 30.
