Michael Irvin Says He'd “Take a Flyer” on Johnny Manziel

Manziel is currently backing up the backup, Austin Davis in Cleveland

Ever since Johnny Manziel was demoted from starter to third string by the Cleveland Browns a week ago, throwing his future with the Browns into question, sports media has been abuzz over the idea that Jerry Jones could attempt to bring Manziel to Dallas on the cheap.

Jones, who is firmly on the record as being a huge Johnny Football fan, famously passed on him in favor of All-Pro guard Zack Martin in the first round of the NFL Draft two years ago.

Some fans believe this is a terrible idea, and that Manziel will bring nothing but distractions to the already pretty distraction-heavy Valley Ranch. Others would point out that the Cowboys wouldn’t have a lot to lose by bringing him in and seeing what he can do.

Hall of Fame receiver Michael Irvin counts himself part of the latter group.

I would take a flyer on Johnny,” Irvin told Sportsnet’s Tim & Sid this week, via the Dallas Morning News. “Jerry (Jones) should take a flyer on him. We're looking for a backup for Tony Romo. You bring him in, see what happens with it and let it roll. I would love to work with Johnny. I think he's quite a talent and he's headed in the right direction.”
