Mazara Showing No Signs of Slowing Down

Another game. Another day of being confident this whole Nomar Mazara thing is real.

At some point the rookie outfielder will convince us to be comfortable that he’s not, in fact, going to turn into a pumpkin. We’re past that point, right?

Mazara continued his impressive streak last night with a three-run homer to center field, helping the Rangers wallop the Indians on Memorial Day. Mazara, who began the season in the minors and was only called up after an injury to Shin-Soo Choo, leads Texas with nine homers and has five — along with 12 RBI — in his last 11 games.

“Another grown-up home run," Rangers manager Jeff Banister said. "He sure doesn’t give the impression that he hasn’t been in the major leagues for very long.”

We’ve seen quick starts and dazzling debuts by Rangers’ power hitters of the past. Dave Hostetler back in the ‘80s. Joey Gallo last year. But, all of the sudden, Mazara has been spectacularly steady for two months.

I think it’s time to pronounce him the real deal. Maybe past time.

A native Texan who was born in Duncanville and graduated from UT-Arlington, Richie Whitt has been a mainstay in the Metroplex media since 1986. He’s held prominent roles on all media platforms including newspaper (Fort Worth Star-Telegram, Dallas Observer), radio (105.3 The Fan) and TV (co-host on TXA 21 and numerous guest appearances, including NBC 5). He lives in McKinney with his wife, Sybil, and two very spoiled dogs.
