Lake Travis Wins Fourth Straight Title

Quarterback Michael Brewer gained 292 total yards and rushed for two touchdowns as Austin Lake Travis won its fourth consecutive state title, beating Denton Ryan 27-7 in the Class 4A Division I championship game Saturday.

Lake Travis (14-2) became the third team in Texas to win four state titles in a row, joining Sealy (1994-97 in Class 3A) and Celina (1998-2001 in Class 2A).

"It's indescribable," Lake Travis junior receiver Griffin Gilbert said. "To fight through all the adversity that we've dealt with and come out on top is an amazing feeling."

Brewer, who has committed to Texas Tech, completed 14-of-22 passes for 211 yards and ran for 81. He rushed for two touchdowns in the first half to help the Cavaliers jump out a 17-0 halftime lead.

Lake Travis, who had a 48-game winning streak snapped in the third week of the season, has won 24 playoff games in a row, one shy of the state record.

Denton Ryan (15-1), playing in its fifth championship game since 2000, did not pick up a first down until early in the third quarter.

Kaylon Alexander rushed for 107 yards, including a 73-yard touchdown early in the third to bring the Raiders within 17-7.

The senior connected on four straight passes for 83 yards, including a 47-yarder to Colin Lagasse. Brewer's 5-yard scoring run finished off a 90-yard drive with 6:09 left in the second quarter.

Stephen Pyle kicked a 44-yard field goal just before halftime to put the Cavaliers ahead 17-0.

Brewer set up the field goal with a 47-yard completion to Gilbert, the brother of Texas quarterback Garrett Gilbert. Brewer set up the field goal with a 47-yard completion to Griffin Gilbert, the brother of Texas quarterback Garrett Gilbert.

Gilbert caught four passes for 88 yards and Lagasse added 69 yards receiving.

The Cavaliers saw their 48-game winning streak end with a loss to Aledo on Sept. 10. Brewer missed that game with a shoulder injury.

Lake Travis also played most of the season without Conner Floyd, who was expected to be one of the team's top receivers.

"We wanted to go undefeated, but our main goal was to win state," Gilbert said. "To push through that first loss and all the injuries we went through just shows how great of a team we are this season."

Lake Travis' Dannon Cavil broke loose on the opening kickoff and was about to give his team great field position. But the ball slipped out of his hands around midfield and Ryan recovered the fumble.

The Raiders, who won back-to-back state titles in 2001-02, couldn't capitalize on the miscue. Ryan committed three false start penalties after the turnover and had to punt on its first drive.

Ryan mustered only 49 yards on 19 plays in the first half and did not have a play longer than nine yards.

Alexander's 73-yard touchdown run came on fourth-and-1 with 9:41 left in the third.

The Raiders didn't score after recovering the ensuing onside kick when Colton Gutierrez missed a 42-yard field goal.

After Pyle kicked a 30-yard field goal late in the third, Lagasse's 1-yard run capped the scoring in the fourth quarter.
