Jon Kitna won’t likely be mentioned in the same breath as Roger Staubach often, but on Sunday, he etched his name next to that of Roger “The Dodger” in the record books. With a 29-yard touchdown run against the Detroit Lions on Sunday, Kitna tied Staubach’s franchise record for longest touchdown run by a quarterback.
When Kitna bootlegged, a veritable sea of green before him, it appeared almost certain that he would score, and put an exclamation mark on the victory--and he did, with an assist from left tackle Doug Free. Kitna said that, while hardly in the same league of Michael Vick with respect to running the ball, given the circumstances, he wasn’t all that surprised that he scored.
“With the defense they were running and the way we designed it, there were pretty high odds,” Kitna said, per ESPN Dallas. “Not because I could do anything special, but because they probably weren’t going to have anybody over there, just like they didn’t. Then you get an extra bonus with the fact that Doug Free’s guy ran over to block the running back, so he was able to go block the safety.
“I would have liked to have seen what would have happened if I was one-on-one with the safety.”
Of course, the show of athleticism didn’t stop Kitna’s teammates from ribbing him about his lack of speed. “Was it 29 yards?” Roy Williams said, when asked of the play. “It took forever.”
