Garrett & Co. Looking to Keep Cowboys' Core Intact

Jason Garrett says the team will do all they can to keep the core in place

Dallas Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett is a student of his profession.

That’s why every offseason, he makes it a point to visit those who have had great success in the field of coaching. In the past, he’s made somewhat famous offseason visits to the University of Alabama to meet with Nick Saban, and Duke to visit Mike Krzyzewski.

But when it comes down to it, Garrett believes personnel is paramount in achieving sustained success, and it’s for that he reason that he views keeping the core of the Cowboys together this offseason as a top priority.

We want to do everything we can to keep this group together, help this group get better and take that next step,” Garrett said, per the Dallas Morning News. “There’s a great story about Derek Jeter. Remember after he made that great play against Oakland in the playoff game--he backs up the play and flips it backhanded? The next day, FOX was promoting the World Series or the playoffs in baseball, and John Madden was doing the game. They were talking about Derek Jeter, and Madden said ‘Jeter is one of those guys who you pick first and decide what game you’re playing next.’

“I think about that really every day. That’s a really important concept for our organization--the idea that you want these guys here, whether they’re coaches, players. You want guys that, we don’t know what game we’re playing, I just know I want this guy on my side. We have a lot of those guys in our organization, and I think we want to keep building our team that way.”
