Former UT, MSU Athlete Died of Pancreatitis Complications

An autopsy has determined that former Montana State football player Eryon Barnett died as a result of complications from pancreatitis, or inflammation of the pancreas.

Gallatin County officials say Barnett, who was 24, was hospitalized in Bozeman for a recent flare-up when he died on July 4.

Barnett, a native of Euless, Texas, played three seasons at Montana State after transferring from Texas in 2012. He missed two games last November due to pancreatitis. MSU coach Rob Ash said Barnett had been battling the illness over the past 18 months.

Ash called Barnett's death devastating.

Bobcats linebackers coach Jody Owens told The Billings Gazette that Barnett always had a huge smile and an uplifting spirit and was a guy everyone wanted to be around.
