Former DBU Pitcher Rising Through Yankees System

A former Dallas Baptist relief pitcher is on the fast track to the majors and could take the mound in the near future wearing the world’s most famous pinstripes.

Chance Adams is making some noise in the Yankees farm system, but not as a reliever. The Yankees brass is so impressed with his stuff they are using him as a starter.

Adams tossed six hitless innings Saturday for Double-A Trenton in their 5-0 shutout win over Richmond. This was the latest of impressive outings for Adams going into the All-Star Break, only allowing a pair of hits in his last 11 innings pitched. In five starts with the Thunder, the righty is 4-0 with a 2.57 ERA while holding his opponents to a .137 batting average.

Adams was a fifth round selection by the Yankees during the 2015 MLB Draft. While at Dallas Baptist, he made 23 appearances, finishing 7-1 with a 1.98 ERA in 2015. Adams struck out 83 in 59 innings for a team that finished 46-15 and hosted the NCAA Dallas Regional.

After being drafted, moving from reliever to starter wasn’t the only change made. When Adams joined the Yankees system, he had a mid-90’s fastball and a cutter. Since then, he changed his cutter to a slider that can be spotted up on both sides of the plate, and his fastball has now been topping out at 99 mph. Adams also has a curve and circle-change in the mix.

Adams could make the jump to Triple-A by the end of this season with the possibility of being in New York at some point next season. The ceiling for him is a number two starter if everything continues to fall into place.

The days of Adams being a “sleeper prospect” are over. Word is now starting to get out that the Yankees really like their “Chance” (sorry about the pun).
