Feeling Blue About Modano's Red

Longtime Stars star faces former team

This is just going to be odd.

As usual, I have tickets to tonight’s Dallas Stars home opener. As usual, I’ll watch Mike Modano shaking the American Airlines Center ice.

As unusual, Modano will be skating said ice while wearing the sweater of the opposing team, the hated-but-respected Detroit Red Wings.

Ugh.

The Dallas organization plans a thank-you tribute to its former face-of-the-franchise during the first period, and that ought to jack him up emotionally for a while. If they really wanted to mess with his emotions, they’d have planned a jersey-retirement ceremony for the pregame.

Not that I wish Modano anything but the best. He deserves it.

For the fans, though, I think it’s going to be a little like sitting in a live studio audience during a filming of “The Surreal World,” only with a fair amount of stick-tapping on the ice.

Fortunately, I’ll be there to see it with my own two eyes. Unfortunately, I’ll be there to see it with my own two eyes. I hated that Modano couldn’t end his career with the franchise with which he started.

All the best Mikey Mo, but go Stars.

Bruce Felps owns and operates East Dallas Times, an online community news outlet serving the White Rock Lake area. He hopes Modano puts up a hat trick … in a losing cause, of course.
