FW Zoo Brings Out Claws, Antlers

Zoo directors place bets on Series

Bears have claws. Deer have antlers. The Fort Worth Zoo has bears and deer, and it’s not afraid to use them.

Fort Worth Zoo Executive Director Michael Fouraker called out his counterpart at the San Francisco Zoo, Executive Director Tanya Peterson, and told her to put her money where her Giant mouth is. Wait, that didn’t come out right.

Oh well, anyway, the two placed a wager on the World Series matchup between the Texas Rangers and San Francisco Giants — Yeah, hadn't you heard? The Rangers are in the Series. I know. — with Fouraker brandishing claws and antlers, and Peterson countering with a beanstalk.

If the Giants win, phhhffttt, Peterson gets a package of Texas pralines and a bottle of tequila from Fouraker. In the more likely event the Rangers take the title, Fouraker gets a box of Ghirardelli chocolate and a bottle of Napa Valley wine. Typical … namby-pamby wine vs. slammin’ tequila. (Gonna be a lot of chocolate heading east after the series is over.)

“I prefer a dry merlot,” a confident Fouraker said figuratively in a news release.

Really, this is great fun and all, but let’s dispense with the staged bets of regional fare. Only one thing’s gonna settle this … play ball!

Bruce Felps owns and operates East Dallas Times, an online community news outlet serving the White Rock Lake area. He’s thinking Rangers in six.
