FC Dallas Advances to Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Final

FC Dallas advanced to the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup final with a 2-1 comeback win over the LA Galaxy in extra time at StubHub Center Wednesday night.

After finding themselves down a goal early in extra time, Dallas scored twice in the final five minutes off headers from midfielder Mauro Diaz to advance.

Despite several good looks at goal from each team, the game headed to extra time after a scoreless regulation.

"I thought both teams played conservatively," FC Dallas head coach Oscar Pareja said. "We had a few chances and LA had chances as well."

In the 100th minute, the Galaxy were awarded a penalty kick as FC Dallas goalkeeper Chris Seitz was deemed to have taken down LA's Giovanni dos Santos. Mike Magee scored the game's first goal.

"After we gave up the goal, I thought we played our best soccer," Pareja said. "The spirit of this team was proven one more time. After the penalty kick, I could tell that our boys would get an equalizer."

Six minutes later, Dallas' Matt Hedges headed a corner kick from Diaz to tie the game.

"Mauro is getting stronger," Pareja said. "I thought his deliveries were marvelous. He put the ball where we wanted it."

Shortly after, Victor Ulloa took another header from Diaz to put Dallas up 2-1 just before the final whistle.

"Mauro [Diaz] served two great balls and Matt [Hedges] and I got on the end of them," Ulloa said. "Mauro is a great set piece taker."

FC Dallas advances to the 2016 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Final where they will host the New England Revolution in late September.

"We have the mentality that we need to win a championship for this team," Ulloa said. "We have a great opportunity at home in front of our fans that deserve it."
