Everyone Gets a Chance to Play in Miracle League Youth Flag Football

It’s a serene scene, watching a lone volunteer set up cones marking a smaller playing field for Miracle League flag football.

The league allows every child the opportunity to play the sport, or be a cheerleader, no matter their level of ability.

The purpose is to provide a positive and encouraging environment and "to really give these kids confidence in themselves and in their abilities; and that’s really another goal is just building confidence," said Ryan Neufeld, Miracle League football director, and father of football player Will Neufeld.

For those who may need assistance maneuvering around the football field, buddies are available to help them get around.

Lee Whitney, the play-by-play announcer, breaks down the ground rules of Miracle League and said penalties are rarely called and score is rarely kept.

“Most of these kids are never going to play for their school, you know?" said Jimmy Pachecom, father and Miracle League coach. "So, they’re never going to get picked. When they do pick teams they’re not going to be involved. So this is a chance for them to get out there and make it about them."

One of the challenges for coaches can be getting everyone heading the right direction on the field.

"A lot of these kids that were on my team — it was their first game," said Pacheco, whose daughter scored one of the game’s touchdowns. "I know she loves football, because I love football."

One of the payoffs for the coaches is witnessing the players' celebrations.

"Way to go buddy! Throw it down, spike it!" yelled a buddy to his player after he scored a touchdown.

When asked about the level of difficulty for the coaches, "It’s easy because it’s fun," said Coach Nathan Lemons. "It's a really good time because you just see how much fun they're having."

After the game, the players of both teams meet to celebrate and say, "Good game! Good game!"

"Everybody deserves a chance to play," said Lee. "Heck, even adults, when they're under 19, deserve a chance."

It's a lesson that is obviously more important than the final score.

"It was a lot, to not as much," said Pacheco with a laugh.

Miracle League games are played every Sunday in October at Reedy High School in Frisco.
