Dez Deadline Deal Makes Cowboys Favorite To Repeat In NFC East

In the midst of me over-basking in the glow of correctly predicting Dez Bryant wouldn’t miss a training camp snap, a couple of Cowboys fans with much-too-good memories gently reminded me about my first Tweet of last year’s regular season:

From Sept. 7, 2014: “Tyron Smith’s first snap is a false start. DeMarco Murray’s first carry is a fumble. 5-11 here they come. #Cowboys.”

Touche.

Meaning: You never know what’s going to happen in the NFL.

A year ago we were all doom-‘n-gloom about the Cowboys, then they went out and won 12 games, a division title and a playoff game. So predictions in July are about as valuable as umbrellas.

But … Unless I’m missing something, Bryant’s signing solidifies the Cowboys as NFC East favorites for 2015. Right?

Admittedly it’s risky to pick a division which hasn’t produced a back-to-back champ since the Eagles in ’03-’04. And I’m skeptical whether Dallas’ committee of anonymity can replicate the rushing production of DeMarco Murray. But other than that, the Cowboys are poised – especially in October with the arrivals of Greg Hardy and Rolando McClain – to be even better this season.

On offense they still have Tony Romo in his prime, a happy Bryant and the division’s best offensive line. And on defense they’re also adding No. 1 pick Byron Jones and the return of leader Sean Lee. The Eagles are actually counting on Sam Bradford to healthy and for Murray to be the reason behind Dallas’ dominating ground game, while the Giants and Redskins have too many holes to even be serious contenders.

Kind of like the Cowboys were at this time last year.
