Derek Jeter follows through on a double during the first inning against the Rays.

Yankee great Derek Jeter reached the exclusive 3,000 hit club in style, going 5-5 with a home run before a sold-out home crowd in the Bronx.

One out into the third inning against the Tampa Bay Rays, Jeter only needed one more hit to reach the 3,000 mark—and he made it a soaring homer.

He drove the ball high over left field and into the seats to the roar of fans there for his historic hit—also his first home run at home this season.

With that move, the long-time Yankee hitter became the first Yankee ever to hit the 3,000 milestone.

He's also only the 28th player in Major League Baseball to have reached the magic number. His former teammate Wade Boggs, who reached it as a Ray, was the only other one to have nailed it with a home run.

Jeter’s nearest and dearest—including his girlfriend, actress Minka Kelly—must have known the moment was sure to come soon and cheered him from their box.

The Yankee shortstop didn't stop with the home run. He added to the historic total with another hit in the game.
