Moving Day turned out to be a good day for Jason Day.
Day, No. 4 in the world golf ranking, climbed into contention after shooting a 63 during the third round of the AT&T Byron Nelson. It was his lowest score ever at the TPC Four Seasons at Las Colinas. Day will go into Sunday’s final round tied for third with Jason Kokrak at 10-under. James Hahn is the clubhouse leader at 12-under with Billy Horschel a shot behind in second place.
Defending champion Sergio Garcia shot 64 to move into a tie for sixth with 2012 champion Jason Dufner and Bud Cauley at 8-under.
Day made his move during the third round, thrilling the crowd in the process. He carded five straight birdies before missing a putt on No. 12. Then Day had perhaps the shot of the day on No. 17, draining a 60-foot putt as the crowd erupted in the background for perhaps the loudest ovation of the tournament.
“That’s one of those things where you got the hands up and if it goes in, great, if it doesn’t, okay,” said Day. “It’s really cool to hear the crowds roar like that again because it’s been a while.”
Hahn was six shots off the lead going into Saturday. He had six birdies throughout the bogey-free round, shooting 32 on the front and back nine. Hahn is looking for his first victory since the 2016 Wells Fargo Championship.
Sunday will be the final round of the AT&T Byron Nelson in Irving. The tournament will move to the Trinity Forest Golf Club in Dallas next year.
