Darvish Headed Home to Japan to Rest

Yu Darvish has done most of his rehab from Tommy John surgery in Dallas-Fort Worth, but now, he's heading home to Japan for about six weeks. But it's not necessarily a "break" from rehabbing. Instead, it's actually a built-in part to his rehab.

The Rangers have built in a six-week "no-throw period" to Darvish's rehab schedule, so he's heading home to Japan for some rest and relaxation before returning in January to resume throwing as he gears up for spring training with a return to big-league action set for some time in May.

“We’re just trying to give these guys every opportunity to be healthy,” general manager Jon Daniels told the Star-Telegram. “We’re trying to figure out how to get ahead of the injury epidemic. It’s just one of the things we’re incorporating in our program.”

It's the second time the Rangers have done this with a pitcher rehabbing from Tommy John surgery, with Martin Perez being the first before he returned to the mound after a 14-month layoff over the summer and pitched fairly well down the stretch for the club.
