Cowboys Positional Grades: Quarterback

With the 2014 season in the rear-view, let's look back at how the Cowboys did on a position-by-position basis. We'll look at starters and contributors, not every last man on the roster.

We're starting the series at the most high-profile position on any football team, the quarterback. Luckily for the Cowboys, they only had to turn to their backup for one start and it was a massive failure, so we're looking only at Tony Romo here, not Brandon Weeden.

Grade: A+

Stats: 304-for-435, 69.9% completion, 113.2 passer rating, 3,705 passing yards, 34 touchdowns, 9 interceptions

Romo came out before the season and told us all that, after two offseason back surgeries, he would show the best version of himself over the course of his decorated career, which has been sullied by numerous failure in big situations.

What we ultimately saw was Romo's greatest season yet in which his only two bad starts came in the season opener when he was still knocking off the rust of a light training camp and preseason schedule and then again on Thanksgiving Day with basically two days of preparation after he'd played the whole season with an extra off-day between games to rest his numerous injuries.

Romo led the league in passer rating and became the first quarterback in NFL history to lose a playoff game with a passer rating of 125.0 or better. He was simply phenomenal, and despite DeMarco Murray's sensational season, he was the team's MVP without question.

This past season will always be remembered as Romo at his best and a year that saw him buck a career-long trend of empty numbers and failed performances in big games. It was a fun year to watch and one the Cowboys hope will be a building block to the coming twilight years of Romo's career.
