Cowboys' Last Playoff Success Spurred Rangers To First World Series

The last time the Cowboys hosted a playoff game, your Rangers’ ace was Scott Feldman.

Yes, it’s been that long.

With the football team back in the postseason for the first time since 2009, I thought it’d be an interesting time to look back at where the baseball team was the last time their Arlington brethren were successful.

In December of 2009, the Rangers had just concluded an 87-75 season under third-year manager Ron Washington. Feldman was a 17-game winner, Kevin Millwood was a staff workhorse, Derek Holland won eight games as a rookie, Matt Harrison was making spot starts and a guy named C.J. Wilson was the bullpen set-up man for closer Frankie Francisco.

The Rangers’ lineup included 1B Chris Davis, 3B Michael Young and 31-homer-31-stolen base 2B Ian Kinsler. Plagued by injuries, Josh Hamilton was limited to 10 homers and 54 RBI in 89 games. Hank Blalock was still hanging around.

But as the Cowboys beat the Eagles at home on Jan. 9, 2010, the Rangers were preparing for a spring training that would catapult them into a 90-win season, the American League Championship and their first World Series. Wilson was about to become a 15-game winner as a starter, Hamilton would embark on an MVP season and the Rangers pulled the trigger on the Cliff Lee trade to enhance their playoff chances.

Safe to say that, amazingly, the Cowboys these days are much closer to a championship than the Rangers.
