The Cowboys’ six-game win streak ended on Monday night at AT&T Stadium as the team was upset by the Washington Redskins in overtime, 20-17.
The loss may be a secondary concern for Cowboys fans as Tony Romo took a shot to the back in the third quarter that left him lying on the turf for several minutes and forced him out of the game for awhile. He eventually returned, but was clearly affected by the sack, just one of five on the night for Washington. Later reports said that it was not a back, but a rib injury.
As for the game itself, after the Cowboys’ game-opening drive stalled, Washington’s Andre Roberts returned the punt to the Dallas 48 and, six plays later, Kai Forbath hit a 44-yard field goal to open the scoring, 3-0.
Dallas looked poised to answer on their first drive of the second quarter. In fact, DeMarco Murray made it all the way to the Washington eight-yard line on a 36-yard catch-and-run--but then, he fumbled.
Fortunately for the Cowboys, the defense was able to make the stop after their second turnover of the night. The other was the handiwork of Joseph Randle in the first quarter.
On the ensuing possession, the Cowboys took the lead with an eight-play, 80-yard drive, capped by a five-yard touchdown pass from Romo to Dez Bryant, to make it 10-7.
Washington retook the lead, at 10-7, on the first possession of the second half, with an eight-play, 80-yard drive of their own. Alfred Morris took in the five-yard touchdown run. Morris finished with 73 yards and the score on 18 carries.
Dan Bailey tied it back up with a 21-yarder, but the Redskins again retook the lead a few minutes later as Colt McCoy scored on a seven-yard rush. A 25-yard touchdown from Brandon Weeden to Jason Witten would tie it up once more and send it to overtime, but that’s when Dallas ran out of luck.
The Redskins got the ball to begin overtime and, after the drive stalled, Forbath hit a 40-yarder to give Washington the 20-17 lead--which is where it would end, after Dallas turned it over on downs.
Romo went 17 of 28 for 209 yards and the touchdown. Weeden went 4 of 6 for 69 yards and a score.
Murray finished with 141 yards on 19 carries.
At 6-2, the Cowboys will face the Arizona Cardinals next Sunday.
