Coppell High School Alum Selected Third Overall in 2017 NFL Draft Pick

Former of Coppell High School Cowboy Solomon Thomas was the third overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft Thursday night.

The Stanford Cardinal defensive lineman won't have to move far, as he was picked by the nearby San Francisco 49ers.

Moving from Palo Alto to Santa Clara would be a short trip for Thomas, who was born in Chicago and lived in Australia for several years before settling in Coppell as a high schooler.

Thomas, a 5-star recruit, was named to the 2013 USA Today All-USA team as a senior for the Cowboys.

"He played every play like he was one bad play from being benched," former Coppell High School coach Joe McBride said. "He was the best player I'd ever coached."

Thomas redshirted for the Cardinal in 2014 and had a relatively quiet 2015 season before bursting onto the national scene in 2016. The redshirt sophomore totalled 62 tackles — 15 for loss — and 8 sacks. He also earned All-America honors and won the Morris Trophy, given to the Pac-12's best offensive or defensive lineman.

The 49ers traded down from the No. 2 pick with the Chicago Bears, who selected North Carolina quarterback Mitch Trubisky.
