Colby Lewis Continues To Display Toughness For Rangers

Strictly business. That’s all Colby Lewis is.

The Rangers righty has been every bit of that this season for the Rangers. You can even say he’s been that way his entire time in Arlington.

Lewis did his thing Friday night against the division rival Astros in the 2-1 win. Seven innings of shutout baseball, striking out six in getting his 100th career win (74 in MLB, 26 in Japan).

Not even a line drive by Astros shortstop Carlos Correa in the seventh that hit Lewis’ glove, bounced off his head and over to Rougned Odor, who then caught the ball while sliding behind second base, could slow him down. The only thing that mattered to Lewis was if it resulted in an out. He went on to finish the inning.

Now Lewis has fought back from elbow and hip surgery in the past, so taking a line drive off the back of his head and shaking it off should come to no surprise. Amazing? Yes, but at this point not surprising.

Earlier in the game, Lewis swatted a bunt attempt from the grass to first baseman Mitch Moreland for the out. The ball was never in Lewis’ glove.

Lewis has been rock solid for the Rangers this season. He’s pitched at least six innings in all nine of his starts this season, to the mark of a 3-0 record with a 2.75 ERA. In the win over the Astros, he was simply magical with the mixture of fastball and off speed pitches.

You have to think that someday you’ll see a plaque of Lewis in the Rangers Hall of Fame just off his postseason heroics alone. He always seems to come through in the clutch when needed for a big game over the years, whether it was regular season or playoffs.

But the toughness and bulldog mentality he’s shown during his career has been just as important to the team’s success. Plus, that kind of stuff rubs off in the clubhouse, along with the work ethic that Lewis has displayed during his time in a Rangers uniform.

Lewis is working on a one-year deal with the Rangers, so enjoy the pitching clinic that he’s putting on so far this season.
