Cameron Yoe senior receiver Aaron Sims caught six passes, three of them for touchdowns, as the Yoemen won the 3A Division I state championship Thursday with a 70-40 victory over Mineola at AT&T Stadium.

Yoe's 70 points tied the record for points scored in an 11-man Texas state title game, set by Stephenville in 2012 with a 70-35 win over El Campo in the 3A Division I championship. The combined score of 110 points fell 8 points shy of the record set by Sulphur Springs and Dayton in the 2008 4A Division II state title game.

The win Thursday in front of 13,561 marks the third straight state title for Yoe (12-4) and fourth overall in school history.

Sims, the offensive MVP of the game with 153 receiving yards, was set up by senior quarterback Reid Nickerson, who threw for 311 yards and five touchdowns. Cameron Yoe junior running back Traion Smith rushed for 123 yards and five touchdowns in the game, three of which came in the first quarter.

Mineola's special teams dug an early hole, starting three of their five first-half drives inside their own 14-yard line.

The opening kick of the game fell in front of the Mineola kick returner and was recovered by Yoe junior defensive back Johnny Alexander on the Yellow Jacket 17-yard line.

The result of the turnover was a 4-yard touchdown run by Smith.

Mineola, making its first state final appearance, started its final drive of the first half on its 11-yard line. After Yoe took two time outs to leave time on the clock before halftime, Mineola turned the ball over on an interception pulled down by senior defensive back John Washington with 27 seconds left. Washington, the defensive MVP of the game, finished with two interceptions.

Yoe would cash in on the pick when Nickerson connected with Sims in triple-coverage for a 39-yard touchdown as time expired on the first half.

The Yellow Jacket special teams created one more score for the Yoemen on a fumbled kick return early in the third quarter that set up a 19-yard touchdown run by Smith, his longest run of the night.

Mineola sophomore quarterback Jeremiah Crawford carried the Yellow Jackets (12-4), rushing for 158 yards and two touchdowns. Yellow Jacket sophomore running back Chantz Perkins finished with 139 yards rushing and two touchdowns.
