When Zero Week comes along in a little more than a month, and Friday night lights are bright once again, many area teams will begin the 16-week trek to a hopeful state championship.
But only a handful of teams will be crowned state champions, and beginning today we'll take a look at the probable champions in each classification and their roads ahead.
In Class 5A Division I, Allen returns as the odds-on favorite to repeat as state champion with not one, but two, high-quality quarterbacks running the show for the Eagles.
Last season, the Eagles' starter, Matt Brown, was injured in their second-round playoff game and gave way to backup Tucker Carter for the rest of the way. Carter went on to win four games, including the state championship over Fort Bend Hightower.
They'll have to get through such tough opponents as Euless Trinity and Odessa Permian, who gets back legendary "Fright Night Lights" coach Gary Gaines this season, but with the dynamic duo of QBs, you have to like their chances in Region I.
In Region II, Dallas Skyline is loaded with what seems to be a bit of an all-star team. The Raiders are closing in on having double-digit numbers in players going Division I, and in WR Mike Davis and LB Corey Nelson, they have two of the most highly regarded players in the state. But DISD teams never seem to get over that hump deep in the postseason, and I like Round Rock Stony Point to take the Region II championship.
Look for Allen and head coach Tom Westerberg to repeat as 5A Division I state champions with a victory over Region III champ Fort Bend Hightower once again.
