Red Oak's Michelle Carter Gets Big Sendoff to Third Olympics

Red Oak's Michelle Carter is headed to Rio for her third Olympics, and about 300 people sent her off in style Tuesday at Red Oak High School.

"It means a lot that all of you are here, because I know that not only my family has my back, I know that all of Red Oak has my back," Carter said.

The Red Oak ISD hosted a rally for the Olympic shot putter Tuesday night.

"There's no doubt that we're so proud of what she's done here for Red Oak and what she's going to do, because we know she's going to get that gold this year," said Red Oak ISD Assistant Superintendent Kevin Freels.

Carter competed in both London and Beijing, but failed to medal.

Now, after winning the World Indoor Championships title in March, this could be her year.

"I want to win in Rio," Carter said. "This is my third time. They say the third time is a charm, so I'm looking forward to going out there and winning a gold medal for Team USA."

Carter leaves for Rio Aug. 5, and will miss that night's Opening Ceremony. The shot put competition begins Aug. 12.
