Big 12 Commissioner on Baylor Scandal: ‘It Reflects on All of Us'

At the annual Big 12 Conference spring business meetings, conference commissioner Bob Bowlsby addressed the recent scandal at Baylor that led to the firing of head football coach Art Briles and the resignations of university chancellor Kenneth Starr and athletics director Ian McCraw.

"I think it's fair to say when we have a conference member that has had the kind of difficulties that they have had at Baylor that it reflects on all of us," Bowlsby said Wednesday. "I think you're always measured by with whom you associate. So, in that regard, we all feel a little bit of the impact of it."

An independent review revealed the Baylor football program had improperly responded to sexual assault allegations involving football players.

Bowlsby made it clear he believed that he doesn't think the scandal "diminishes our other institutions, because we have institutions that are doing a great job educating kids and are running a first-rate athletics program."

With the conference considering expansion, Bowlsby also does not think the recent shakeup at Baylor will affect other schools' interest in joining the conference.

"It doesn't seem to have made us any less popular in terms of people reaching out to us and expressing their interest," he said.
