Some tragedies end up with happy endings, or at least positive updates, such as the story of DeSoto football player Corey Borner, who was paralyzed during spring football and has been making strides toward being able to hopefully walk again someday.

Then there's stories like the one that happened Saturday evening that just don't seem fair and have no happy or positive results in sight, at least not in the near future.

On Saturday at Lake Lewisville, Denton Guyer junior varsity football player Remond Elder Jr. drowned after being caught up in a fishing line in less than 10 feet of water while attending a family gathering. A family friend tried to rescue the 16-year-old, just a week after his birthday, but he lost him in the murky, muddy water.

Elder Jr. was apparently a light in the Guyer football program. Though he was just on JV last season, many coaches and fellow players in the program saw something special in him, and head coach John Walsh said he would have likely been a varsity player in the fall.

“It’s been a good outpouring of teammates and coaches. Our hearts are heavy right now. … It affects the whole program. We’re a close-knit family up here.”

“He was an extremely hard worker and committed to the program,” Walsh said. “He had a good, positive personality. He would’ve made varsity this year. He was power runner."
