Former Dallas Cowboys head coach Jimmy Johnson is a first time finalist for the Pro Football Hall of Fame, and his quarterback Troy Aikman believes he deserves to be enshrined for what he did with the team after replacing Tom Landry in 1989.
Just the second head coach in franchise history, Johnson went 1-15 in his first NFL season. But in 1992, his fourth year with the team, he led the team to a Super Bowl Championship. Johnson and co. repeated in 1993 before abruptly leaving the team after an infamous spat with Jerry Jones.
The team that Johnson built went on to lose in the NFC Championship in 1994 under Barry Switzer. In 1995, under Switzer, the group became the first team in history to win three Super Bowls in four years.
“With Jimmy, I believe that he is a Hall of Fame coach,” Aikman told 1310-AM The Ticket this week, via the Dallas Morning News. “I know what he meant to our success. There’s guys like myself who are in the Hall of Fame, and a big reason for that is what Jimmy put together, and so I believe that he’s deserving. And I was just told last night that there’s only two coaches in the Hall of Fame who have less than 100 victories. One is Vince Lombardi, and the other one is Bill Walsh. I was shocked that Bill Walsh didn’t have 100 victories. So that hurts Jimmy, I guess, is what I’m hearing. But he was obviously great in a short period of time, and I’d put him against anybody.”
