$70.3M High School Stadium Tops Everything Else in the US

At $70.3 million, Katy's Legacy Stadium surpasses McKinney's $69.9 million stadium

Texas is holding its claim to having the biggest, and most expensive, high school stadiums in the country.

The Katy Independent School District, outside Houston, unveiled its megastadium with an equally extravagant dedication ceremony Thursday.

The price tag: $70.3 million.

School district officials said the stadium can hold a crowd of 77,000 when it hosts its first game on Aug. 31.

Voters approved a bond project to build Legacy Stadium in 2014, KPRC reported, with the original cost set last year at $58 million. District officials said the price jumped to $70 million due to construction costs.

Katy ISD said the stadium will also host fine arts events, extracurricular activities and other district events.

A few hours' drive north will be McKinney ISD's new stadium, which is expected to top $69.9 million when it opens in 2018.
