Trump Strongly Hints at Pardon for Ex-Sheriff Arpaio

"I won't do it tonight," Trump told a crowd at his Arizona rally on Tuesday

President Donald Trump said Tuesday night that Sheriff Joe Arpaio will be "just fine" despite being found guilty of criminal contempt for violating a court order as the president strongly hinted that he might pardon the man known as "America's toughest sheriff," NBC News reported.

"Do the people in this room like Sheriff Joe," Trump asked of the thousands of supporters gathered here for a campaign rally in Phoenix who erupted into chants of "pardon Joe!"

Trump responded, "I won't do it tonight," adding that he wanted to avoid causing "any controversy."

Trump also blamed the media for condemnation of the way he responded to violence at a white nationalist rally in Virginia and skewered Arizona's two Republican senators, though said he showed "presidential" restraint by refusing to mention their names.
