Democratic U.S. Rep. Eddie Bernice Johnson says the new Texas redistricting plan intentionally discriminates against minorities.
Johnson testified Monday in a San Antonio federal courtroom. The longtime Dallas lawmaker was followed on the witness stand by U.S. Rep. Henry Cuellar.
Johnson said the new map passed by the Republican-controlled Texas Legislature doesn't give Hispanics and blacks in her area the chance to elect their own candidates.
Johnson said minority population growth in the last Census proves the groups deserve their own representation.
Texas received four new congressional seats following the last Census count. Democrats have sued to block the GOP-drawn map.
The trial is expected to end this week.
