Texas Democratic Delegates Aim to Turn the State Blue

As Texas Democratic delegates get ready for the election, there is optimism that this could be their year to change the tide in the Lone Star State.

“I think we will turn Texas blue,” said delegate Jackie Soliz-Chapa.

It is an uphill fight. Texas has not voted for a Democrat for president in more than three decades. But in the fight, many of the delegates feel they have an unlikely ally in Republican nominee Donald Trump.

“Me, being a Latina and a woman, I am offended over and over by him. So, I think this is the year the Latinas really come out to vote,” added Soliz-Chapa.

Turnout is key, according to Texas State Sen. Royce West, who has been talking blue for some time.

“Hopefully Donald Trump will continue with all his rhetoric and from that vantage point, if he continues with the rhetoric, that will get people more excited and have a sense of urgency when it comes to turning out the vote,” said West.

Former State Sen. Wendy Davis knows what it’s like to try and win in a blue state. She lost the gubernatorial race to Greg Abbott by double digits, despite national name recognition.

“It is not going to happen overnight, and I believe in it. I believe in it with all my heart, and I believe that ultimately we can turn Texas blue,” said Davis.

Some delegates believe it could be achievable in the short term, but it’s on them to help.

“After here, we are going to energize, we are going to mobilize our party faithful. We are going to knock on doors. We are going to register voters,” said delegate Luciano Garza.
