The Texas Senate race in western Tarrant County is being watched carefully in Austin and across the state.

The winner of the race to represent western Tarrant County in the Texas Senate will likely set the tone for politics in the upcoming Legislative session.

The only competitive race pits Democratic Sen. Wendy Davis against challenger Rep. Mark Shelton.

Republicans hope a win there will put Republicans within one seat of a two-thirds supermajority capable of passing any laws they want. Democrats hold 12 out of 31 seats, giving them just enough leverage to block some laws.

If Shelton wins, then Republicans will only need to court one Democrat defector to accomplish their goals. The Fort Worth race appears very tight, with both sides claiming advantages going into Nov. 6.
