State GOP Chair Resigns, Joins Perry's Campaign

    Tina Benkiser, chair of the Texas Republican Party, will be stepping down effective October 5th to join Ricky Perry's campaign for re-election.

    Tina Benkiser, chair of the Texas Republican Party, will be stepping down effective October 5th, according to a press release recieved Saturday.

    Benkiser will join Gov. Rick Perry's re-election campaign as a "senior advisor."

    “I am stepping down as chairman so that I can enthusiastically support the only true conservative in the Texas governor’s race, Governor Rick Perry,” said Benkiser.

    “Gov. Perry loves Texas and he cares about Texans. He has shown leadership when Washington has not, and he has shown courage when others have bailed. I look forward to embracing my role as senior advisor to Governor Perry’s re-election effort and I am confident that my choice will move the cause for conservatism forward.”

    Benkiser has served as chair of the Texas Republican Party since 2003.
