    NEWSLETTERS

Social media was buzzing with talk that presidential hopeful Texas Sen. Ted Cruz and the lead singer of 80s Christian rock band Stryper were one in the same, a rumor that Michael Sweet had fun with Thursday. (Published Thursday, March 17, 2016)

Sen. Ted Cruz has a look-a-like, a guitarist in a Christian rock band, and their resemblance has gone viral.

"It is so mind boggling at times what goes viral," said Michael Sweet, the guitarist for Stryper.

A tweet from Sweet started it all, after he said he saw the picture and sent it out on social media. It soon became the number one story trending on Facebook.

"Yesterday morning I woke up and someone said, 'You know you are the number one trending story on Facebook.' And I thought to myself what story? Because I didn't think about that story. I really did not think it was much of anything. And I went and looked and there it was," Sweet said.

"I don't think I look anything like Ted Cruz. I am eight years older than Ted. I got long hair," Sweet added.

There are some similarities, tough. They both wear boots. Cruz is on the road, and Sweet will be soon. Stryper is going on tour.

But it may end there. Cruz was the subject of US Weekly's column "25 Things You Don't Know About Me."

He shared that his first car was a 1978 Ford Fairmont, nicknamed the Green Bomb. His favorite movie is the Princess Bride. Sweet liked the Princess Bride, but it is not his favorite.

    Cruz may not be either.

"I may wind up voting for Ted. I doubt it, but at this point in time, I don't know," said Sweet.
