Rowlett Mayor Skips Meeting Discussing His Fate

Rowlett Mayor John Harper was a no-show at Tuesday night's council meeting, which included an agenda item calling for his resignation.

The mayor and the City Council have been feuding over the city budget. At a tea party meeting earlier this month, Harper called one of the other council members "a fool."

"I would say to the mayor -- if he was here tonight -- 'I am very disappointed in your actions. The city and council deserve better,'" Mayor Pro Tem Todd Gottel said.

Rowlett resident Laurie Ann Dygowski held a sign during Tuesday's meeting that read, "You're the Fool."

"I want to ask him to resign, let Rowlett go back to what it was before he started this crazy act he's been on," she said.

But Harper also clearly still has support. Several people spoke in support of the mayor during the public comment forum.

Harper, who has two years left in his term, has said in recent days that he'll resign if enough people want him to.

"I think the city of Rowlett is losing a great public servant if he decides to resign," Richard Lavendar said.

Harper did not answer calls to his home for comment.
