Perry Dials Back Christian Appeal in Iowa, Cites Job Record

In a switch from four years ago, Rick Perry is no longer making an all-out appeal to Iowa evangelicals a centerpiece of his Republican presidential campaign.

Instead, he's talking up his executive experience and strong job-creation record when he was Texas governor, and his five years in the Air Force.

TV ads backing Perry in Iowa focus on securing the U.S.-Mexico border -- not on God.

It's a departure for Perry, who in 2012 courted Christian conservatives furiously but was unable to win much support. Other candidates, like fellow Texan Ted Cruz, have pushed much harder to woo evangelicals.

Some Iowans say they'd like to hear more about Perry's faith. Others say the change could broaden his appeal with voters tired of too much talk about religion in the campaign.
