North Texas Democrats Work to Get Out the Vote as National Convention Starts

As their party's national convention begins in Philadelphia, Tarrant County Democrats are busy working to get out the vote this November.

"What we're doing right now is cleaning up our lists and finding volunteers," said Lynn Johnson, executive director of the Tarrant County Democratic Party.

Volunteers manned the phones at the party's headquarters in Fort Worth Monday night.

"People move, and people change their phone numbers," Johnson said. "That's our objective right this minute, because we need more volunteers on hand to call people for getting out the vote."

Democratic party leaders in North Texas remain confident theirs will be the party of unity going forward, even as the Democratic National Convention got off to a rocky start.

"We didn't start out the way we wanted to," said Carol Donovan, Dallas County Democratic Chair.

"The party will definitely come out more united with this convention," Donovan added. "It has a great lineup. You're not seeing the boycott of the convention like you did with the Republican convention."

"I think by the end of this convention we're going to see probably the most united Democratic Party as we've had in an incredibly long time," Johnson said.

"I'm not going to be so bold as to predict that we're going to turn Texas blue this first time out," Donovan said, "but I am saying that I think Hillary is going to get a lot of support where some prior Democratic nominees did not."
