National Democrats Expand Texas Footprint Ahead of November

National Democrats are stepping up their efforts in Texas ahead of November's presidential election -- even though the party hasn't won statewide office here since 1994.

The Democratic National Committee announced Wednesday that Texas is the fourth state joining its Victory Leaders Council program after Arizona, Georgia and Utah.

The initiative partners top state Democrats and grassroots activists with Washington party officials, hoping to make conservative states more competitive.

Donald Trump is expected to beat Hillary Clinton in Texas, despite polls suggesting the race could be tightening up.

The DNC says the councils "will be volunteer-led" but work closely with the Clinton campaign in each participating state.

The Republicans' Texas statewide office unbeaten streak is the longest in the nation. Texas hasn't voted Democratic in a presidential election since 1976.
