Like Perry, Abbott Says He'll Leave Texas to Lure Businesses

Republican Gov. Greg Abbott this summer is taking up where his predecessor left off -- traveling across the U.S. and world to recruit businesses to Texas.

Abbott on Wednesday revealed plans to continue one of former Gov. Rick Perry's most enduring but also criticized legacies. Perry spent a decade carving a self-styled reputation as a boardroom deal-closer whose sales pitches kept the Texas economy humming.

Abbott says he's not going to wander around "hoping that we find gold." He says he will instead go where his office already believes there are companies that can be persuaded to relocate to Texas.

Abbott said he wasn't ready to announce his first destinations.

Democrats and watchdog groups often questioned how much credit Perry's trips deserved for bringing companies to an already fast-growing state.
