Gov. Perry's Security Detail Tops $2.9 Million

The Texas Department of Public Safety says the cost since 2010 to provide security for Gov. Rick Perry when he travels out of state is more than $2.9 million.

The San Antonio Express-News reports the DPS tally covers the cost of food, fuel, lodging and travel for Perry's security detail, which accompanies him for state business, political trips or vacation.

Of the $2.93 million in security expenses tallied since Perry's re-election, $1.8 million was amassed from August 2011 to January 2012, during his unsuccessful campaign for the GOP presidential nomination.

Some of his more recent stops have included London, Las Vegas, New York and San Diego.

His travel costs typically are paid by his campaign or another entity like an economic development group. But Texas taxpayers foot the bill for security.
